When the Cage Isn't a Cage

A few days ago during meditation, Spirit showed me something that has stayed with me ever since.

I found myself sitting peacefully in my meditation sphere with Guadalupe, my beautiful red dragon, curled around my meditation pillow as she often is. My lion cub was happily snuggled in my lap when I noticed something descending from above.

It was a beautiful golden structure, glowing with brilliant white light. My first thought was, "That looks an awful lot like a bird cage."

I wasn't frightened, but I wasn't exactly thrilled with the comparison either.

Instinctively, I tried to scoot myself into the center of it. Every time I moved, I somehow found myself sitting right back against the edge.

It was as though no matter how much I tried to reposition myself, I wasn't meant to sit anywhere except where I already was.

Then I noticed something interesting.

Because Guadalupe is so large, the structure didn't completely enclose her. It simply passed down through the middle of her body, and she didn't seem bothered by it in the slightest. She remained peaceful, calm, and completely unconcerned.

That was the moment something inside me shifted.

Maybe this wasn't a cage at all.

We Don't Always Recognize Protection

I think many of us have experienced seasons where life suddenly feels smaller.

A job doesn't work out.

A relationship ends.

Health challenges slow us down.

Plans change.

Doors close.

We often interpret those moments as being trapped, stuck, or held back.

Our first instinct is to push against the boundaries. We search for a way out. We wonder what we've done wrong. We ask why life suddenly feels so limiting.

But what if we've misunderstood what's happening?

What if the thing we've been calling a cage is actually a place of protection?

A Cage or a Chrysalis?

As I reflected on the meditation, another image came to mind.

A caterpillar enters a chrysalis.

If the caterpillar could think the way we do, it might believe it had become imprisoned. Its world becomes incredibly small. Everything familiar disappears. Movement is restricted. Nothing looks like freedom.

Yet we know the truth.

The chrysalis isn't a prison.

It's a place of transformation.

Without it, the butterfly could never become what it was created to be.

From the outside, a cage and a chrysalis can look surprisingly similar.

The difference isn't what they look like.

The difference is what they're accomplishing.

Trusting the Season You're In

Perhaps there are seasons when Spirit gently narrows our world—not to punish us, but to prepare us.

Sometimes we need fewer distractions.

Sometimes we need stillness.

Sometimes our path becomes smaller so our awareness can become larger.

That doesn't mean these seasons are easy.

In fact, they can feel uncomfortable because our human nature wants movement. We want answers. We want progress that we can see.

Yet Spirit often works in ways we cannot immediately recognize.

The deepest transformation usually happens quietly.

Maybe You're Not Stuck

If your life feels smaller right now...

If doors seem to be closing...

If you feel as though you're waiting while everyone else is moving forward...

Consider the possibility that this season may not be a punishment.

It may not even be a delay.

It may be preparation.

The boundaries you're experiencing today may be holding space for a version of yourself that isn't quite ready to emerge.

Just as the butterfly cannot rush the chrysalis, we cannot rush our own becoming.

A Gentle Reflection

Take a quiet moment today and ask yourself:

Where in my life have I been calling something a cage?

Then gently ask another question.

What if it's actually a chrysalis?

Sometimes changing the question changes everything.

Perhaps Spirit isn't keeping you from your future.

Perhaps Spirit is lovingly preparing you for it.
