When Spirit Changes Your Perspective Instead of Your Path

Most of us pray for a new path.

A different job.

A healthier relationship.

A clear answer.

A sign that tells us exactly what to do next.

We ask Spirit to change what is happening around us.

But what if the greatest gift Spirit could offer isn't a new path at all?

What if it's a new way of seeing the one we're already walking?

There have been many times when I've gone into meditation or quiet reflection hoping Spirit would show me what to do next. I expected answers. Direction. A solution.

Instead, something much quieter would happen.

My perspective would shift.

Sometimes I would find myself viewing a situation from a completely different angle. Other times I would realize that nothing in my circumstances had changed, yet everything felt different because I was no longer looking at it through the same lens.

It has taught me something I continue to come back to.

Spirit doesn't always remove the obstacle before us.

Sometimes Spirit simply invites us to stand somewhere new so we can finally see what has been there all along.

How often do we postpone our peace because we're waiting for life to change?

We tell ourselves we'll feel better when the answer arrives.

When the relationship heals.

When the opportunity appears.

When the uncertainty ends.

Yet some of the greatest moments of clarity don't come because our circumstances change.

They come because our perspective does.

The challenge may still be there.

The conversation may still need to happen.

The work may still be waiting.

But fear begins to soften.

Hope quietly returns.

What once looked impossible begins to feel manageable.

Not because the path changed.

Because we did.

Perhaps this is one of Spirit's gentlest forms of guidance.

Not changing our destination.

Simply helping us see the journey through new eyes.

A Perspective Shift Practice

Before we finish, I'd like to share a practice that has stayed with me for many years. I first learned it during a therapeutic coaching class, but over time it has become a beautiful part of my own spiritual practice.

Whenever life feels overwhelming, this exercise helps me step outside the problem long enough to see it from a different perspective.

Find a quiet place where you won't be interrupted for a few minutes.

Close your eyes.

Take several slow, gentle breaths.

Before you begin, quietly ask:

"Spirit, show me this situation as You see it, not as fear sees it."

Now bring to mind a situation that has been weighing on your heart.

Rather than thinking about the problem, imagine it now exists outside of you.

Allow it to take whatever form naturally comes to mind.

There is no right or wrong answer.

Simply observe with curiosity.

Ask yourself:

  • If this situation had a shape, what would it look like?

  • What color is it?

  • Is it smooth or rough?

  • Is it transparent or solid?

  • Does it feel heavy or light?

  • Is it moving or perfectly still?

  • Is it resting on the ground, floating in the air, or sitting on top of something else?

  • Approximately how large is it?

Simply notice.

There is nothing you need to fix.

Now imagine that you have everything you need to work with it.

Ask yourself:

  • Is there a tool that would help reshape it?

  • Could it become smaller?

  • Could its edges soften?

  • Could it become lighter?

  • Could it unfold into something new?

  • Is there someone—perhaps Spirit, one of your guides, or a loved one in Spirit—who wishes to help you?

Allow whatever feels right to happen naturally.

Watch the object begin to change.

When it feels complete, gently pick it up and hold it in the palm of your hand.

Notice how it feels now.

Ask yourself:

Has the situation actually changed...or has my relationship with it changed?

Finally, ask Spirit:

"What are You trying to help me see that I couldn't see before?"

Sit quietly for a few moments.

Allow any thoughts, feelings, images, or insights to arise without forcing them.

When you're ready, spend a few minutes journaling about your experience. You may discover that what once felt overwhelming now feels approachable—not because the challenge disappeared, but because your perspective shifted.

Sometimes the greatest miracle isn't that Spirit changes our circumstances.

Sometimes the miracle is that Spirit changes the way we see them.

So if you've been asking Spirit for a new path lately, perhaps try asking a different question.

"Spirit, is there something You're inviting me to see differently?"

You may discover that the path beneath your feet has been leading you exactly where you need to be all along.

Perhaps what needed to change wasn't the path.

Perhaps it was simply the view.

With love and gratitude,
